Does the number exist?

See whether the number is active or has been disconnected. It is the fastest way to clean up an old list.

What does HLR stand for?

Home Location Register. It is the register operators use to keep track of which numbers exist and where they belong. A lookup queries that register directly.

Can the recipient tell that we looked their number up?

No. An HLR lookup is a query against the operator's register, not a message. Nothing is sent to the handset and it does not ring.

When is it worth it?

Once your list has been around a while. If a lookup costs DKK 0.08 and an SMS costs DKK 0.30, it pays for itself as soon as a little over a quarter of the numbers you would otherwise have messaged turn out to be dead.
